The Car Bomb As Art

The work "Baghdad" by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller shows the aftermath of a bombing at Iraq's Al-Mutanabbi book market, which killed 38 people, by preserving and displaying one of the cars destroyed in the attack.

This single vehicle from the car bombing is on display at the Imperial War Museum in London, England and sits next to other military hardware. The piece is particularly striking because images of these massive bombings are so large it's difficult to sort out all the trauma and easy to forget each death is its own large tragedy for the people involved. Focusing on just one individual piece of the destruction is a meditation on the brutality of modern urban warfare.
