We remember somewhere around '87 or '88, we had a Road & Track special editon that focused entirely on tuned cars, ranked by their 0-60 times. In this age of the CLS and the upcoming Rapide and Panamera, a four-door capable of 180mph doesn't seem all that astounding, but we remember the AMG Hammer damaging our poor little on-the-edge of pubescent brain. This was rarefied territory. Sure, 160k, even in today's dollars will buy you more performance, but the Hammer was the car that made it more than acceptable to go really freaking fast with more than one set of doors. Here then, is to the Hammer and those wacky boys in Affalterbach who made it happen.
