'The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR Is One Very Hot Ride'

Can the small town of Owings Mills, Maryland handle the turbocharged fury of one of Japan's greatest rallying legends? We're about to find out in this classic installment of MotorWeek!

If the Lancer Evolution looks like it's an economy sedan that's been thoroughly re-worked into a race car, that's... well, because it is. But its performance is never to be underestimated, as it can get as violent as it looks when sent to the track.

That's exactly what John Davis and the MotorWeek crew do in this episode, putting the Evo's 276 horsepower, all-wheel-drive and idiot-proof climate controls to the test in the Evo's natural environment. (No, not dirt. A track. But it's close enough.)

Does the Evo's cheap speed win the crew over? Check out the video and find out.

I made one of these look awfully silly though a series of "S" curves in the pouring rain in my '99 1LE Z28 - despite the fact that the MR had the on paper advantage of AWD.

At least the driver was cool about he. He gave me a huge "thumbs up" when he eventually too his exit.
