Of 23 companies highlighted by The Atlantic for having no women on their board of directors, five are automakers. Those five are Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Fiat and Tesla.
Might have to rethink my next car purchase. Can't get a Ford now, they employ women!
All kidding aside, more men are interested in cars than women. And while these are more business related positions, I'm sure a company would rather hire someone who both has a degree in the field, and is a car enthusiast over someone who doesn't know as much about the company's product. It's the same with the tech industry, more men are interested in computers and software than women.
It's not sexism, it's just the way the world works. Less women applying for the job, less women on the board. Should a company hire someone who could be less qualified simply to be able to say "we have a woman on board!". To me, that seems more sexist than just hiring the most qualified person.
