According to the AP, technology is making SUVs sold in the US safer. And that technology is stability control. To wit, 78 of the SUVs currently on sale (and apparently there are more than 78 SUVs on sale) received a 4-star rollover rating compared with just 48 trucks and truck-like vehicles last year. This is significant because while rollovers only account for 3% of American crashes, they cause more than 33% of the deaths. A 5-star rating means that a vehicle has a 1 in 10 shot of rolling over in a single vehicle crash. A 4-star rating means a 10-20% chance. While 83% of all SUVs currently on sale in the States offer stability control, no SUV has ever merited a 5-star rollover rating. [Associated Press]
