It's fair to say that there weren't too many guys who went from being R&B-obsessive Detroit hot rodders to paragons of the Sixties San Francisco counterculture. In fact, there may have just been one. While surfer-dude Rick Griffin appropriated Von Dutch's Flying Eyeball and turned it into an image inextricably linked with Jimi Hendrix, Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley came up with designs that still adorn the back of Type 2 Volkswagens to this day.
