Spy Photos: Audi Q5 Test Mule

It's been so long since we've heard a peep from Audi's Q5 small ute program that we'd almost forgotten it was in play. If you hadn't heard, the company is reportedly building a smaller SUV to slot in below the Q7 and compete with the BMW X3, Land Rover Freelander and on-the-way Mercedes GLK. Now, spies — who caught shots of a mule built from the sheetmetal of an Allroad wagon — say the Q5 will be larger than those rivals, with components derived from the VW Touareg and a platform wrenched from the A4 and A6. That means V8 power for the US market. It also means that when it arrives in early 2008, it'll occupy its own niche of smallish, V8-powered crossover luxury utes. Audi: 1, dead horse: 0.
