We're very hard on Pontiac's late-model GTO (or Holden Monaro for our friends down under), because we can smell wasted potential like it were burning garbage. In most cases, General Motors s Performance Division exemplifies such waste. Just look what those guys can do if given half a chance. They open up the history books for inspiration, put pen to paper, and devise a version of the GTO that's closer to our ideal than anything we could have imagined without a complete teardown. Not content to merely boost performance, the team found an elegant solution to the problem of the car's ho-hum design: Big-ass flared fenders. It worked for Mercedes AMG, and it works for the Monaro, er, GTO. GM should get let these guys out of the dungeon more often.
