Sanyo, perennial also-ran in the Japanese consumer electronics market, is making a play for the big time, attempting to corner half of the market in batteries for hybrid vehicles. The company already supplies batteries to Ford and Honda for their hybrids and now they've signed up with VW to develop next-gen cells as part of their plan to "achieve our long-term goal of securing half the global market share of batteries for hybrid cars in 2010," according to a company spokesman.
