Joey Logano took home the win today at one of the most exciting runnings of the Daytona 500, ever.
While fans everywhere had high hopes for retiring Jeff Gordon to win NASCAR's flagship race in his final season, it was Logano who took home the checkered flag in the end, his first time to do so. Kevin Harvick finished second and Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished third.
"I can't believe it," an overjoyed Logano said after the race. "The Daytona 500! Oh my God! Are you kidding, I was so nervous, the entire race."
He added: "Daytona 500!"
Much of the first part of the race was largely uneventful, despite the knockout, re-entry and ultimate departure of Tony Stewart. But things heated up toward the end with 16 full laps of three-wide racing, all the way through the back field.
With three laps to go the red flag came after as Justin Allgaier got tagged by Ty Dillon, ending his race with his car touching the wall. All that drama came to a pause as officials worked to clear the track.
But before that, this Daytona 500 was described by commentators as "Some of the most exciting three-wide racing ever seen in NASCAR." It all came down to a green-white-checkered finish, but the drama wasn't over there. Right in the final lap, several drivers got involved in a huge crash in the back stretch.
