On this day in 1957, Toyota opened its first headquarters in the United States, probably never dreaming that it would some day manufacture 25 million cars on North American soil. The headquarters was set up in an old Rambler dealership in Hollywood, and was opened in advance of the arrival of its first car for the American market. The Toyopet turned out to be a disaster for Toyota, and it had to regroup and come back with something more suited to American roads. It took Toyota until 1972 to sell a million cars in the United States. Now, the rest is history.
