To combat the upcoming Toyota FT-86 and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda's preparing a replacement for the slow-selling RX-8. Reports from Japan indicate the automaker's looking to revive the RX-7. Fast and the Furai? Sadly, not so much.
The new model will reportedly use Mazda's next-gen Renesis 16X rotary engine first shown in the Taiki concept from the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The twin-rotor 1600cc Wankel, larger than the current RX-8's engine, is rumored to be capable of producing nearly 350 HP and 215 lb-ft of torque.
Although initially we'd heard Mazda would use styling cues straight from the absolutely gorgeous Furai Concept, but reports now indicate more of a conventional design will be implemented. Partly it's to evoke the RX-7 and partly it's to cut costs and allow it to be priced aggressively against the competition.
The RX-8 replacement was originally slated to appear in 2012, however Edmunds Inside Line is now claiming we'll see it as early as 2011. We can't wait.
