Proof new car dealerships were a lot weirder in the 1970s

Nothing says it's 1970s like the line of custom vans sitting in front of Hayward Dodge in Hayward, Ca. We found this gem while looking through the awesome gallery of vintage car dealerships where we found yesterday's picture of Lancaster Lincoln Mercury.

Maybe it's because I wasn't alive in the 1970s but the popularity of custom vans has always been an impossible phenomenon to understand, even now in a ironic "How terribly awesome were custom vans?" kind of way.

These days the building that used to house Hayward Dodge looks like this and is used to sell beigemobiles—one of the few things in the automotive universe worse than custom vans.
