Just because you can do something doesn’t necessarily mean you should do it. This is how I feel about this 1971 Porsche 914 with a 350 Chevy V8 engine selling on Craigslist right now for $9900.
Now, my specialty is not the technical side of cars. I’m a race fan who understands enough about everyday production vehicles to appreciate a good car when I see one. I spent college working with engineers and machinists to build our own car. I get the basics.
But what I do not understand is the purpose of Frankenstein creatures like this Porsche/Chevy hybrid. What is the thought process behind creating a vehicle like this? What’s the Chevy engine supposed to actually do? Has mankind just stumbled on the perfect track day vehicle, or is this just a poor attempt at trying to get the 914 to corner a little bit better for a lack of anything better to do in Idaho?
Help me out, Jalopnik. Give me the low-down. Is this worth the money? And what the hell is it supposed to actually do? I have too many unanswered questions about this Porsche.
