Bentley executives insist safety concerns led their decision to forsake the traditional steel "grandma catcher" grillework at the bow of the $165,000 Continental Flying Spur for a more forgiving plastic construction. It was not, they say, a matter of cost-cutting, weight saving or adhering to new EU standards for pedestrian safety. Plus, hitting the pavement, one executive said, is what causes the real damage to those on foot. Simply smashing.
