Today’s qualifying and practice sessions for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb have been cancelled after a motorcyclist reportedly went off a cliff, and now a coroner is on scene. [UPDATE]
Word from Asphalt and Rubber is that Carl Sorensen died today on Pikes Peak while racing his Ducati 848 Superbike. No other details about the crash at this time aside from his location between Devil’s Playground and the mountain’s summit.
“There was an incident today during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb practice,” the race organizers said in a statement. “We have no further information at this time.”
The Gazette was the first to report that a unnamed rider had gone off, and shortly before 9 AM race officials closed the course. The Denver Post is now reporting that the El Paso County Coroner’s Office is responding to a death on the mountain.
We’ll update this post when we get an official statement from PPIHC.
