If anyone was skeptical that LA Times publisher Otis Chandler wasn't sitting on one of the greatest collections of reprocessed iron ore in the world, the final tally after the Gooding & Co. Auction at Chandler's occasionally-open-to-the-public museum should put the doubting Thomases in their place. The biggies were a 1931 Duesenberg J Special Phaeton which went for $2.64 million and a 1904 Mercedes 40/45 HP Sports Touring which netted $2.25 million. And with vehicles like Chandler's Aught-Seven Harley Strap-Tank Single going for $352,000, the record-breaking $36,094,250 grand total wasn't exactly a shock.
