There was a time when dropping a phrase like "Pumpe-Duese" into conversation could extract a lethal combination of excitement and disbelief from the most tight-as-drum-heads VW PR people at German auto shows. The joy of hearing a company phrase — meaning, literally "pump nozzle," referring to its diesel fuel management system — uttered by an American journalist reacted violently with the suspicion of being condescended to. The results were a catastrophic meltdown of composure as predictable as a new moon. Ahh, good times. But now, VW announced it's switching from Pumpe-Duese to common-rail technology for its three- and four-cylinder diesel engines, starting in 2007. Oh well, back to the phrase books.
