Nissan: Go, Go Ghosn Profits!

Like Inspector Gadget, CEO Carlos Ghosn seems able to extend a balance sheet beyond lengths anyone thought possible. He's a man insiders seem to love, hate or love to hate. But one thing's clear, he seems to be doing something right — 'cause Nissan's reporting a 9.4% profit for the first quarter of the year. In fact, the numbers look so good the Japanese automaker decided "Heck, let's go drop $200 million on a plant in St. Petersburg, Russia!" For those not-quite-clear, St. Petersburg is to Leningrad as New York was once New Amsterdam. Still not sure? New York was once New Amsterdam as Istanbul was Constantinople. Why they changed it? We can't say — people just liked it better that way.
