New Torquemonster for the Track: BMW's 120d Racer

Considering Audi's win at Sebring last weekend with a diesel-powered racer, oil burners might just have a future in this town. Selbstverst ndlich!, says BMW Motorsport, which announced it was offering privateer teams a new 120d racing package. Actually, it's not a first racing diesel for the Bim; the company saw waving checkers back in 1998 at the N rburgring 24 Hours with a 320d driven by Brit Steve Soper. The new 1-Series gets a modified 2.0-liter diesel mill producing 245hp and 332 ft.-lbs of torque, a lowered suspension with adjustable anti-roll bars and dampers, race-ready brakes (six-piston front calipers, four in the rear) BBS alloys, an aero kit including rear diffuser, and a stripped-out interior. The price for all this diesely sportingness is $114,702 over the base price of the 120d, which is $25,000. Soon, that gurgling sound you hear on race day may be the cars on the track, not your stomach.
