I guess somebody at Darlington Raceway got our hint. The ultra-popular NASCAR throwback weekend is back on the schedule for 2016. Which historic liveries would you like to see?
The track will be celebrating the 1975-1984 era in 2016, according to Motorsport.com. While this means that my beloved Cartoon Network cars aren’t likely to make an appearance, it does mean that NASCAR will celebrate a formative period in its modern era. Thus, cars from famous racers including Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty, Bobby Allison and Dale Earnhardt are fair game for the throwback.
Darlington Raceway president Chip Wile explained that the popularity of last year’s event convinced them to do it again this year. Wile explained in a track press release:
We had tremendous response from the industry last season, which included the race teams, NASCAR, NBC, Goodyear and the NASCAR Hall of Fame, to name a few. This is a fun and unique way to honor the history and heritage of NASCAR racing at one of the sport’s most iconic tracks on Labor Day weekend.
The event was so beloved that it earned the facility the National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers Award for outstanding contributions to stock car racing, reports Motorsport.com. Personally, I can’t think of a better way to introduce fans to the sport’s history than by featuring it in motion.
