Muscle Car Shootout aired last night on Speed TV. Should I give away the ending?
The lineup included seven of the most iconic models, equipped with the most coveted big-block factory sport packages, among the major post-1968 muscle groups. They were run factory stock (no fooling with the sway bars or other junk):
1969 AMX 390 GO PACKAGE
1970 BUICK GS 455 STAGE 1
1970 HEMI CHALLENGER
1970 CHEVELLE SS 454 LS6
1969 MUSTANG BOSS 429
1969 HURST OLDSMOBILE
1969 PONTIAC GTO JUDGE
Anyone who missed the shootout care to make an after-the-fact prediction? (Warning: Past perfect tense ahead.) Remember, the cars were judged on a range of attributes; the winner would have to have been the most well rounded. Now, if pure acceleration were the only test, the Buick GS, Chevelle LS6 and the Hemi would probably have had the edge; if handling were the decider, the less boat-like Mustang and AMX would have been on top; standing quarter mile? With all that horsepower, it would have been a tossup (minus the AMX, if you re a purist). OK, I won t give away the ending, just in case you re planning on buying the video. Suffice to say, boss, it was no surprise if you really think about it.
