Details are emerging on Jeep's line-expansion plans using Dodge's new Caliber platform. According to AutoWeek, Jeep will introduce two car-based vehicles in 2006 to compete with the Subaru Forester and small, car-based SUVs like Toyota's RAV4. The new vehicles could be called Patriot, Scout or Compass (though, we're partial to "Canteen").

The move appears to be a natural fit for Jeep, considering the platform — created with Mitsubishi to replace the Neon — is engineered specifically to support all-wheel drivetrains. Still, even with names cribbed from Field and Stream (or, for that matter, Soldier of Fortune) the company risks diluting its Trail Rated mythology by sending a couple of greenhorns down the pike.

With Dodge's Caliber expected to go into production next March, the new Jeeps should hit in time to be parked too close to the class of 2007's homecoming bonfire.
