Most car reviewers, no matter how they feel about the rest of the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse, seem to feel its complex design — from the extreme roundness of its bootay to the depth of its flankward carveouts — works somehow. Now, the Mitsubishi concept that spawned the Eclipse, the 2004 E-boost, has taken a Gold medal in the category of design explorations in the Industrial Design Society of America's 2005 Industrial Design Excellence Awards. The group was particularly taken by the concept's "evocative appearance" and "soft, athletic lines" that depart from "current automotive trend toward heavy, sharp, boxy forms." Funny, we thought Cadillac's sharp lines and, er, boxy forms were supposed to be cutting-edge. We're so five minutes ago.
