Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen crashed out of Rally Finland today in fairly dramatic fashion. The Finn was leading the event when he lost control of his Focus RS and somersaulted over a hill. Crazy in-car and spectator footage below.
Hirvonen rolled his car five times on a right-hand corner just nine kilometers from the start of the rally's fourth stage. He and his co-driver, Jarmo Lehtinen, escaped uninjured, but they're out of the event. Hirvonen's retirement promoted Petter Solberg into the rally lead, while Jari-Matti Latvala moved up to second and Dani Sordo third. The video below shows him annihilating a spectator's camera — with footage from the camera as it gets hit — as well as the depth and breadth of the accident.
More information can be found here. A picture of Hirvonen's Abu Dhabi-sponsored car before the accident can be found here. Hirvonen driving a Ford Anglia (woo!) through the woods can be found here.
