Mercedes-Benz will face down the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander with a new compact, all-wheel-drive version of the C-Class, according to a report in Automotive News. (For readers of AutoWeek, it's the frequent object of speculation, the "X-Class.") Expect the European version — which will be offerred with a range of engines, from four- to eight-bangers — in 2007. A US version, which may be built in Brazil by lithe, thong-wearing frescobol players, will likely surface in 2008.
