As Haas makes the jump to Formula 1, it’s a good time to look back on America’s most legendary, defiant, maybe even successful racing teams of the past.
I am a huge fan of Penske’s F1 effort in the ‘70s, which even got us a win at the ‘76 Austrian Grand Prix. The car was the Penske PC4, the driver was never-quite-champion John Watson from Northern Ireland.
I got to get up close with the car this year at the Monterey Historics and it is as wonderful as you can imagine to see red white and blue on a Cosworth DFV-powered grand prix winner.
