Volkswagen may have already figured out a way out of its Phaeton debacle: Make it a Porsche. Porsche reportedly had been considering a run at the luxury-sport sedan market years ago, but declined for fear of diluting its sports-car brand equity. Recently, however, the business possibilities — vis- -vis both market demand and the successful expansion of Porsche s brand, via the Cayenne SUV are making that run more likely. The rumor mill is suggesting Porsche could leverage its shared-development relationship with VW to recast the Phaeton as a super-sedan, in an effort to court buyers of performance four-doors like the Mercedes AMG or Audi RS6. Stranger things have happened between the two (remember the 914?).
