Is Buick Considering a New Grand National?

GM Inside News has a hot tip on a plan by Buick to offer its upcoming Rivera model with the 3.6 liter, twin-turbo, 400 hp V6 that graced the company's Velite concept car, from whence the Riviera was spawned. The car will share a platform with the much-anticipated "sporty Chevy coupe" (Camaro?), and a lengthened version the 2007 Pontiac GTO. Word is, Buick will bring back its Grand National badging to pin on it. Quick story...

Back when Jalopnik was a wee geek, one of our death-metal buds had a monster '69 Plymouth GTX — which was unbeatable (street racing's illegal, kids, don't do it). It had a tweaked-out 440ci motor, with a carb so big we measured out our treks to the "strip" in gallons to the mile. The only car that came close to taking the GTX off the line was an '87 Buick Grand National. That thing went like a Trident missle, powered by a humiliatingly small, turbo'd V6 — two could fit under the GTX's soccer field of a hood. If Buick could bring back that kind of muscle in such a tight package, it'd have a friend for life, even if granddad still drives a LeSabre.
