Infiniti To Rename Their Cars QXXX Where X = Nothing

In a bid to confuse those of us who cover cars, and maybe those who buy them, Infinti is going back to their weird alphanumeric system that means nothing and makes no sense. All luxury crossovers and SUVs will be named QX, which means the EX35 is now the QX50, the Infiniti JX is now the QX60, the smaller FX is now the QX70 and the QX56 is now the QX80. See, they go up in number as they get bigger (except for the QX70, which is actually smaller than the QX60).

The new G-Series sedan is now the Q50, even though it has nothing to do with the QX50 other than it's cheaper than the Q60, which is a two-dour coupe that was formerly the G-Series Coupe, which has nothing to do with the 7-passenger QX60, just like the Q70 (formerly M) has nothing to do with the QX70.

"Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework," said Infiniti's Johan de Nysschen.

Yes, a simple and consistent nomenclature… like if you gave the cars letters of increasing number to match increasing size plus a number that indicated the engine size. Maybe try that?
