The Wiltshire Constabulary sounds like a fine force stocked with reasonable Englishman — and with an excellent press agent. Soon, constables will be patroling their southwest Blighty beat in a Lexus GS 450h hybrid sedan — the first such cruiser to go into service. It makes perfect sense: When the bobbies are popping 'round the town, the full-hybrid's V6 engine shuts off instead of idling in front of the chip shop, and the performance figures make chasing down ducktailed cafe racers quick as Bob's your uncle. (Sorry, our frame of reference somehow got wedged into an episode of "The Avengers.") A spokesman for the force says the 341-hp (gas-electric net) car will be used for "varied traffic duties."
