Lions Dragstrip, circa 1966. A French film crew shows up with their Arriflexes to cover the gassers-and-railjobs scene at the iconic Los Angeles raceway. What they caught was a great piece of film. Break out that high-school French, mes frères.
Like ABC's "Wide World of Sports" in the US was France's "Les Coulisses De L'Exploit" (or the far less romantic-sounding "Behind the Scenes of Achievement," or more literally, "in the wings," as in backstage "of achievement.") The show, which ran on public television through most of the 1960s, aired documentary-style segments covering niche sporting events from around the world. California Drag racing in the early nitro age (sorry, Le Top Gas) was their kind of story.
