Going Dutch: The Spyker Laviolette

It could be the most inelegant supercar ever built, a Mr. Potatohead vision of a mid-engined sportster: start with a bulbous form, stick on some obtrusive intake ports, the front end of a last-generation Porsche 911, a pair of tilting doors and jam a fairing under its chin, et voila — the Spyker Laviolette. [Updated: New Photos!]

It's a car that doesn't know whether it wants to be an exotic street smoker or a gentleman's tourer, with options such as F1-approved safety fuel bags integrated in left and right inner chassis members and made-to-measure Connolly leather suitcases. Maybe it's time for Holland to reconsider its tolerant drug-enforcement policies.

[Update: One reader sent in some photos that really illustrate the Laviolette's pomposity. "I think it must be those Dutch are crazy about aluminum. To understand the Spyker you've got to like the 'raw aluminum' look. The one they (Spyker Squadron) raced at Sebring was all raw, polished aluminum, like an airplane with no paint. The street models are like looking into a jewelry box. Check out the attached pictures from the recent Palm Beach International Concours." Don't mind if we do. Thanks, David.]
