GM Sets Class Record at Bonneville Speed Week

Veteran Bonneville racer and auto journalist Don Sherman took GM's Ecotec-powered Lakester to 189.205 mph — a speed record in the G Class/Blown Gas Lakester group. The record likely made GM Performance Division honchos happier than a basket of puppies on Zoloft, considering the division offers such Ecotec crate motors (and the aftermarket parts that make it speed-record worthy — like the supercharger that boosted the Lakester's horsepower to 312) for sale to anyone with a wrench and a dream. The Lakester broke the previous class record of 179.381, set last year in the high-tech reincarnation of the famous So-Cal Speed Shop Lakester — a high-tech version of SoCal founder Alex Xydias's Belly Tanker of the early '50s.
