Officially, the Chevrolet Volt gets 60 mpg when running on electricity and gasoline. But one GM engineer who ran electric-only mode for several weeks traveled 1,554 miles on half a gallon of gas — or 3,108 mpg.
Andy Oury's video posted by GM also shows the Volt's "maintenance mode," where the car senses its engine has sat unused and turns it on for a few minutes to circulate its fluids. If Oury doesn't use his entire tank of gas within a year, the Volt will run a longer engine burn to empty its tank before the gas gets stale. The Nissan Leaf employs a similar strategy to keep fuel fresh — although it only works for diesel used by tow trucks.
