Graduate students from the Interactive Design Institute in Ivrea, Italy, infused an old Fiat 500 with an abbondanza of interactive technologies. Drivers "initialize" the little cinquecento by sending it an SMS message, to which it responds with prerecorded greetings, while on-board wireless networks and digital video gadgetry allow drivers and passengers to send e-mail messages and record digital photos and video clips. Digital media can also be projected to an outside wall from a lens located between the headlights. Add a sad clown, a strongman and a road trip, and you've got a geek-age version of Fellini's "La Strada," only happier.
