Eco One: Made from Plants

With tires made from potato skins, a body from hemp, lubricants from vegetable oil and brake pads from cashew nuts, you might not expect this to be a fast car. But Eco One's power-to-weight ratio of 540 bhp per ton is greater than that of a Ferrari Enzo, giving it a top speed of 150mph and a 0-60 time less than 4 seconds. Eco One runs on E85, a mixture of 85% bio ethanol and 15% gasoline, the 106 octane rating means the 600cc bike engine can run higher compression ratios and produce more power than standard. Students at Warwick University built the car to showcase renewable materials. According to Project Manager Ben Wood, "If we can build a high-performance car that can be virtually grown from seed, just imagine what's possible for the average family car." [via Warwick University]
