Yesterday’s Formula One Singapore Grand Prix wasn’t just bizarre because a Mercedes didn’t finish. No, some idiot who thought it would be cool to walk across an active F1 track stole the show. Now he’s been arrested.
According to the FIA, a 27-year-old man has been arrested by the Singapore Police Force for sneaking onto the Marina Bay Street Circuit near Turn 13 while the F1 grand prix was still going on, triggering a safety car.
As we reported earlier, not every gate was manned by security, which could explain how this man was able to casually walk onto the track surface itself.
Security cameras of the incident show a much worse faux pas than was displayed on the race broadcast. Not only did the man hop onto a live circuit, but he also crossed over the racing line to get there.
Not only is there the potential for bodily harm and gruesome death when you hop onto a live race track, but modern F1 circuits use a small army of cameras to ensure everything’s running properly and there aren’t any yahoos running on to the track. There’s a very high probability that you’ll get caught, as this dude found out.
Update: According to the Straits Times, a British national named Yogvitam Pravin Dhokia is being held for the offense, which endangered the lives of the Formula One drivers on track. Bail was set at $15,000 and his passport was impounded, but Dhokia claims that the bail amount is too high, as he is not working at the moment. If convicted, he could face up to $2,500 in fines and/or face jail time of up to six months. [H/T Mockngbrd!]
