Unlike many Americans still on waiting lists for a new hybrid vehicle, the US Marines will be getting their hybrids shortly. The Marines will likely be the first branch of the service to deploy the Shadow RST-V, a new diesel-electric hybrid vehicle that can be used for reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting missions. The Shadow is powered by a 168hp four-cylinder diesel engine, boosted by four hub-mounted 50kW magnet motors, powered by lithium-ion battery packs. The electric systems offer a total rated output of 20kW hours and a peak power output of 80kW. The e-system augments the diesel motor when "burst" energy is needed, and recharges during periods of low demand, and through braking regeneration. We had no idea warfare could be so environmentally friendly. [Thanks to Sayyad for the tip!]
