Our calvacade of young sports car operators gave Hammer Down an opportunity to provide his own memory of father-son hoonage:

When I was 17 and about to take Dad's third child, a 1967 Corvette Convertible to prom, he took me out for a drive so I could get some experience behind the wheel of a thirty year old car. While driving around we found ourselves on an empty section of two lane asphalt. Dad told me to "open it up" and I ran it to about 100 mph for a short stretch. After we slowed down he looked at me and said "There, now you've gone fast and you won't need to do it again." Although that statement didn't exactly work out as he planned, and I started "borrowing" the car nearly every weekend he was out of town, I look back on those few minutes with him and smile. Cheers to another dad that allows his son to get behind the wheel and enjoy a few minutes hammering on their performance car. All fathers who love performance cars and are fortunate enough to be able to afford one should teach their sons two things. One, to respect the power of the car and how to drive it safely. And two, to get out there and open it up once in awhile.
