Corning has just introduced a new pollution-control filter for diesel passenger cars that's designed to trap a higher percentage of soot particles than current filter technology. Slated for debut on European passenger cars in 2006, Corning hopes that with rising fuel costs, the filter will allow more diesels on American roads without an attendant increase in air pollution. A lot of forces are colliding in the auto industry right now, possibly marking the biggest shift in the way automobiles are designed and built since the 1970s.
