Most people have trouble making direct requests, especially when it concerns romance or money. Rather than asking a friend to repay a debt they'll engage in an elliptical conversation wherein they'll ask related questions like "so, how is that lawnmower" or "geez, I seem to have less money in my account, isn't that weird?"
