Commenter Of The Day: Cryptid Edition

A cryptid is a creature believed to exist, at least by some, but with a lack of evidence supporting its existence. The most famous examples of these are the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, though not all cryptids are necessarily the figments of certain overactive imaginations. The Okapi, which is similar to a giraffe but looks like a zebra, was considered a crpytid for a long period of time by much of the western world until they were "discovered" by European researchers in the early 20th century. One of our favorite jokes revolves around the famous crypto-zoologically fascinating Yeti, wherein Mitch Hedberg claims all the blurry photos of Bigfoot aren't the fault of unskilled photographers but rather because "Bigfoot is blurry, which is extra scary to me." The Corvette headstone was one of those things we'd heard of but wasn't sure existed, but Tempesjo explains it's a common phenomena, though he doesn't have the photo to prove it.

I saw something similar a few years ago at a cemetery in East Dubuque, IL, except it was a mud truck etched into a tombstone. I really wanted to take a picture, but decided against it for three reasons:

1. I was attending a funeral, and my family thinks I'm weird enough without me walking off and taking pictures of headstones.

2. The deceased had died young and relatively recently, and I knew if I had a picture I wouldn't be able to stop myself from posting it somewhere, where it might be subject to my and/or other people's sarcastic comments. Out of respect for the deceased and his family, I concluded I should wait at least 20 years or so.

3. I didn't have a camera with me. I think this was the deciding factor, as I could have rationalized my way out of reasons 1 and 2 if I had a camera.

We'd have at least attempted to limit our jokes, hoping no one pokes fun of the Volvo wagon on our tombstone.
