The truth is somewhat more underwhelming: the rental-car business went for a paltry 5.6 billlion in cash, just slightly more than a third of yesterday's apparently wild-ass prognostication. The winners? Clayton Dubilier & Rice, The Carlyle Group and Merrill Lynch Global Private Equity; one of two investment consortiums reported to be interested in Hertz.
