Land surveyors can also achieve Theremin-like effects with a Schonstedt metal locator. Unlike the original Theremin, it isn't a completely hands-free experience; one must manually rotate the volume control knob to make it loud or soft, but pitch can be controlled not only with the sensitivity potentiometer but also Theremin-style by waving the wand close to and away from a paramagnetic object, such as an iron rod. Changing the orientation - straight up-and-down versus inclined at an angle, and oriented North-South versus East-West, also varies the pitch, so you can do some real rockstar moves while jamming on your Schonstedt.
