Like pinochle players on the Titanic, Chevrolet and Ford are squared off in a battle that could see the General's brand beat its rival in giving cars away for free sales for 2005 — a feat it hasn't accomplished since the '80s. Ford has been the #1 brand in the US market for 18 years, while Chevrolet has languished in second place. For the first 10 months of this year, both brands' market share in the US is 15.7 percent, but GM is confident its new full-sized SUVs and a widespread year-end clearance could put Chevy over the top.
