A UK car owner nearly paid the price for a crime his Opel Astra didn't commit. The man's Astra had allegedly been "cloned," meaning a stolen car that looked like his was fitted with a duplicate license plate number and registration paperwork. After the stolen Astra was caught by a traffic camera for speeding, and was involved in a hit-and-run accident, the man had to fight to clear his (and his car's) name. Estimates place around 10,000 cloned vehicles on UK strets, and police have issued warnings to car buyers to mind suspicious used vehicles. Cloning is also common among thieves in the US.
