As mentioned yesterday, Champ Car has announced the schedule for its 2008 season, including a return to Portland International Raceway on July 27, 2008. Unfortunately, that's also the same weekend as the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship at Washougal Motocross Park on the other side of town. Previous Champ Car races in Portland have seen diminishing crowds, so we're not sure of the wisdom of programming an event on that weekend. We're not sure how much crossover there is among the MX and Champ Car crowds, but we'd try and book a hotel yesterday if we were planning to go to either event. [The Columbian]
There is an MX track in the middle of PIR. Given the rather, ahem, wet nature of the weather here in Portland the summer schedule of automotive events gets incredibly crowded during the summer.
Oh and don't worry about hotels in Portland. There are a lot of hotels and motels available and with the track being right off of I-5 getting to/from the track is about the same no matter where you're staying. So go ahead, book a cabin up in Mount Hood and enjoy some scenery between events ;)
The reason for the decline in attendance at PIR? Lackluster racing, high prices and a general disreguard for the general public. Champ Car has been trying to be the North American version of F1 for so long that they've all but driven the general public away.
