In a column he penned for The Independent, billionaire Richard Branson advises the country's next Chancellor that MG Rover should become the first European manufacturer of hybrid cars. The company, he says, is worth saving — its Longbridge plant is one of the most modern in Europe, its workforce productive and its Rover 75 a decent-selling car — which could be accomplished with soft loans from the European Union. An Airbus-style EU bailout, he says, could allow Rover to retool, with an eye toward becoming the premier (and premiere) provider of hybrid cars in Europe. Oh, and get rid of income tax, wankers.
