BMW's M performance shop will build 25,000 high- performance cars in 2005. Although that's a mere 2% of all the cars BMW will sell in the year, it's 40% of all cars sold as specialty "sub-brands" of carmakers along with those of DaimlerChrysler's AMG and Jaguar's "R." Profits on the high-margin models, like the $60,000 M3 and $130,000 M5 are enough to make the Los Angeles Times take notice — though it could be the crowd of Ms parked in front of every Starbucks in the city that first got their attention.
